Watchfire’s Houston, TX facility, home to the Spectrum by Watchfire line of fixed-digit scoreboards, is entering a new chapter as it moves to a larger, more technology-focused facility. This move supports the company’s continued growth and innovation. The move represents more than expanded square footage; it reflects the same forward-thinking mindset that has defined Spectrum since its earliest days.

The new facility will span approximately 53,000 square feet, including nearly 46,000 square feet dedicated to manufacturing operations, along with updated office space built to support future advancements in sports technology. Investments in new infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities, including a new plasma table and an automated handling system that will help Spectrum continue delivering the precision, durability, and innovation customers expect. That commitment to innovation has remained consistent over the years.

The history of Spectrum dates back to 1947, with the installation of a digital scoreboard at Rice University. A group of IBM engineers working on that project recognized something bigger than a single installation: electronic scoreboards represented the future of sports. They left IBM to form General Electronics, planting the seeds for what would eventually become The Spectrum Corporation.

Through the 1960s and early ’70s, innovation accelerated. Jim Bishop, who had been deeply involved in the sale, manufacture, and installation of electronic scoreboards, co-founded Sport Scoreboards in 1971. By 1973, after acquiring rival General Electronics with additional partners, the company re-emerged as Spectrum, positioned to lead a rapidly evolving industry.

A major turning point in Spectrum’s history emerged in 1989 with the introduction of the first programmable practice segment timer, developed at the recommendation of legendary college football coach Emory Ballard. What began as a practical solution for structuring football practices quickly transformed programs nationwide. Coaches could automate drills, control practice segments with precision, and maximize every minute on the field.

That coach-first mindset kept the momentum rolling. In 1990, Spectrum introduced its talking scoreboard controller featuring the unmistakable voice of Texas legend and Houston Oilers head coach Bum Phillips, making game-day operations feel almost effortless. Just two years later, Spectrum pushed the industry forward again by replacing incandescent bulbs with industry-leading LED technology, delivering brighter, cleaner visibility for sports facilities.

As demand grew, Spectrum expanded its manufacturing footprint in 1993 and again in 1999, a pattern that continues with today’s newest facility investment. In 2004, Houston Rockets icon Clyde “The Glide” Drexler endorsed Spectrum, further elevating the brand’s visibility in athletics.

Then in 2006, Spectrum installed its first high school video scoreboard, bringing live video and replay capabilities to local athletics and foreshadowing the immersive video experiences now common in high school stadiums nationwide.

In 2023, Watchfire acquired Spectrum Scoreboards, uniting 50+ years of scoreboard expertise with premier LED display technology. The acquisition strengthened Watchfire’s position in sports venues and expanded its ability to serve schools, universities, and professional organizations with integrated solutions for stadiums and arenas-view stadium and arena solutions.

The following chapter arrives in 2025 with TouchConnect, a next-generation scoring controller. It doesn’t just update the standard; it rewrites it. Building on Spectrum’s trail of innovations, it brings pro-level functionality into a sleek, intuitive platform that gives operators more speed, more control, and more confidence on game day.

From a Houston scoreboard that sparked a movement to innovations that reshaped football practice, LED visibility, and video experiences, Spectrum didn’t just keep pace with change; it drove it, leaving a legacy that continues to improve today’s game day.
